In the body we find it all. The burdens are in the body, the original gifts are in the body and the qualities of Self energy are in the body. (It is) a source of wisdom, strength and healing” writes IFS Institute Lead Trainer Susan McConnell in her recent book, Somatic Internal Family Systems.
The somatic experience of both client and therapist opens a crucial pathway to non-verbal trailheads, a body-to-body Self-to-part relationship, and the healing resource of embodied Self energy. Parts can shape posture, movement, affect, breath, expression and physiological
arousal. They can cause, use and react to physical symptoms like chronic pain and illness. The body may say ‘no’ when a client cannot. Some parts may only communicate somatically, so IFS therapists need to learn how to listen to the implicit language, or ‘unspoken voice’, of the body. The Somatic IFS practices – somatic awareness, conscious breathing, radical resonance, mindful movement and attuned touch – provide a map into the sensory richness of the ‘bodymind’, helping IFS therapists to include the body’s stories and support clients beyond survival towards greater wholeness and aliveness.
