Way, way back during my clinical internship a supervisor mentioned that two areas that therapists feared to tread were sex and money with their clients, a reflection of society’s general taboo about enquiring into one’s income or sexual life. This disinclination persists even today to the extent that both therapist and client are frequently reluctant to raise these issues.
This workshop aims to help the mental health professional overcome their resistance to discussing sex and intimacy with their clients. In addition, you will be equipped to provide useful information and guidance about the interplay of psychology, biology, and the relational issues that contribute to sexual harmony and disharmony. You will have an opportunity to develop confidence in helping clients address sexual disappointments and can refer on in the case of complex/chronic sexual difficulties.
Ari will briefly explore persistent ‘sexual myths’ and then cover two aspects of sexual relationships: one is the inter-relationship between desire, pleasure, eroticism, and fulfillment, including some information about each of these four pillars; and the second is treating attachment issues applied to couples presenting with sexual issues based on the Emotionally Focused Therapy model .
In the morning session, a ‘new model’ of fulfilling sexual relationships will be explored. This will be followed by therapist skills and information to help couples incorporate these findings into a more fulfilling sexual, intimate relationship. Included will be the inter-play of psychology, biology, and relationship issues. The session will look at assessment of sexual problems and strategies to enhance and then maintain desire.
The afternoon session focuses on Emotionally Focused Couple Therapy applied to couples presenting with sexual issues in their relationship. After a brief introduction to the core tenants of EFT (it would be helpful, but not required if participants were familiar with both Attachment Theory applied to adults and Sue Johnson’s EFT model. (Her book ‘Hold Me Tight’ is a good reference) Ari will discuss its application to couples with sexual issues and then demonstrate the EFT skills in a role-play.

Dr Ari Badaines trained as a clinical psychologist in the USA and received a post-doctoral National Institute of Mental Health fellowship in Washington, DC. Ari has been a consultant to numerous organisations including Relate in the UK, Richmond Fellowship and Youth-in-Search in Australia. He has taught at various universities in the USA, UK, and Australia including ACU and ACAP in Sydney and has also has led workshops in over twenty countries. Ari has been in private practice for over 45 years. The main theoretical orientation of his training was psychodynamic psychotherapy, and he had many years of supervised, clinical practice, including a one year pre doctoral internship at a psycho-analytic training institute in New York. As the demands for therapy grew, the ‘payer’ (governments, insurance companies, clients) demanded more parsimonious approaches, Ari undertook trainings to develop the skills for TLDP. He currently maintains a private practice in Sydney, consults to treatment organisations and supervises other therapists; he is a popular presenter for Pesi AU and runs trainings in the UK and Europe twice a year.
