Section 1: Recognizing Mental Illnesses and Bio-psycho-social Approach to Understand Common Mental Disorders and Dual Diagnosis Presentations

  • Recognize and understand Common mental disorders and Dual diagnosis presentations. Key points about personality will be discussed in formulations
  • Ask the right questions in assessment to arrive at the correct diagnosis, by learning to efficiently use ICD, DSM and structured instruments like MINI.

Section 2: Mental State Examination for Common Mental Disorders, Assessment of Self-Harm and Suicidal Risk

  • Enhance your skills and confidence in Mental state examination, by learning a structured approach to examination, further enhanced by use of self-rated and observer rated scales for Common mental disorders and dual diagnosis presentations (e.g., reasons for substance use scale)
  • Improve the efficiency of Self-harm and Suicidal risk assessments, and confidence level of any risk assessment, by utilizing contemporary as well as a structured CASE approach. Learn basics of Crisis management and Safety planning, so that assessment includes management related questions to guide better interventions.

  • Key points and approach to Addiction Medicine and Addiction Psychiatry related medications (e.g. Opioid replacement, Nicotine Replacement and Anticraving medications)

Amongst very few Psychiatrists, to be a practitioner, trainer and RANZCP accredited faculty and supervisor of psychotherapy. Dr Shukla works with a stable foundation in psychotherapy, from formal training and extensive practice of psychotherapy and teaching of 15 years.

Winner of ‘Best Psychotherapy of the Year’ award in 2002, by the Indian Psychiatric Society and RANZCP accredited Faculty and Supervisor of Psychotherapy and Addiction Psychiatry, accredited Faculty Adult and C-L Psychiatry, he has extensive clinical experience: Lead Consultant in Psychiatry for specialist Addiction Psychiatry service (SUMITT), Crisis and Acute Treatment Team (CATT) and GP-Shared Care. Consultant in Acute Psychiatry Inpatient Unit, Community Mental Health, Adult Prevention and Recovery Centre (PARC). Currently working in private practice and a public Dual diagnosis rehabilitation centre.

Objectives

This one day training is divided in 3 sections: Learning objectives for each section are as below:

Section 1: Recognizing Mental Illnesses and Bio-psycho-social Approach to Understand Common Mental Disorders and Dual Diagnosis Presentations

  1. Increased ability to Recognize and understand Common mental disorders and Dual diagnosis presentations
  2. Ability to utilize DSM-5, ICD-10 more efficiently and accurately, as well as be ready to use their updated versions in future.
  3. Improved ability to develop person centred and individualized formulations, by using a Bio-Psycho-Social approach and structured 6P formulations
  4. Enhanced ability to work collaboratively with clients, to recognize and formulate their presentations, as well as to understand the link between their psychological world and physical symptoms

Section 2: Mental State Examination for Common Mental Disorders, Assessment of Self-Harm and Suicidal Risk

  1. Improved ability to conduct a Mental state examination (MSE) throughout the contact with your client, with focus on form as well as content, strengths as well as risks.
  2. Ability to utilize structured diagnostic instruments like DSM-5, ICD-1, MINI, and self-rated and observer rated scales to improve the efficiency and quality of MSE.
  3. Improved risk assessment through use and understanding of instruments such as the HCR-20, NSSI and Suicidal risk assessment for BPD, and CASE approach

Section 3: Pharmacotherapy treatments for Common Mental Disorders and Dual Diagnosis Presentations

  1. Increased awareness of Psychopharmacology, Monoamine hypothesis and commonly used Psychotropics (Psychiatric medications)
  2. Simplified and user-friendly understanding of Neurotransmission, Molecular targets of drugs, and Neurobiology of mental disorders and addictions
  3. Enhanced ability to discuss scientific information in a simplified manner with clients. Awareness of user-friendly resources, which professionals and clients can access.
  4. Improved ability to enhance client awareness about both prescription and over the counter (OTC) medications which are evidence based to significantly enhance success rates of treatment.

  • Approach to Screening, Assessment, Diagnosis/Formulation, and Intervention, with discussion of principles and purpose of each step
  • Practice session with PSYCHECK and MENTAL HEALTH Screening, followed by Practice with DSM-5, ICD-10, MINI and Reasons for Substance Use Scales
  • Practice session of 6P’s of Formulation, and putting it all together into a one pager

  • Practice session of risk assessment through use and understanding of HCR-20, NSSI and Suicidal risk assessment for BPD, and CASE approach

  • Psychopharmacology for substance use disorders and dual diagnosis
  • Basic information about Attention Deficit Hyperactivity disorder medications
