Description

Health literacy is the capacity to obtain, process, and understand basic health information to make appropriate health decisions. This keynote presentation synthesises findings on health literacy within the youth demographic, focusing on identifying effective perspectives and interventions in mental health. Despite the increasing emphasis on health education, adolescents and young adults often exhibit a marked deficit in health literacy, which can influence their long-term health behaviours and outcomes. Recent studies have underscored the multifaceted nature of health literacy, which includes the ability to navigate the healthcare system, communicate with healthcare providers, and critically evaluate health information for credibility and relevance. The current research indicates that traditional didactic educational approaches are less effective than interactive, participatory methods in enhancing health literacy among young people. Innovative strategies such as peer-led discussions, problem-based learning, and the use of digital media have shown promise in engaging this cohort, fostering both understanding and retention of health-related knowledge, including mental health information. School-based health literacy programs that integrate health education into the curriculum have demonstrated significant improvements in students' ability to make informed health choices.

This presentation calls for a shift towards more dynamic and youth-centered educational models that resonate with the unique needs and preferences of young people and discusses the limitations met along the way. By adopting such approaches, health professionals and educators can review the associated risks and significantly improve the health literacy of young populations, thereby empowering them to become informed health consumers and advocates for their own mental well-being.
