Description

Trauma therapy can feel frustrating when clients hit roadblocks. Without a clear framework, progress stalls, leaving both clinicians and clients feeling stuck. The truth is, talk therapy alone isn’t enough—trauma needs a structured, integrative approach.

In this training, you’ll learn about Phase Based Clinical Applications for working with complex trauma and will be introduced to the Integrative Trauma and Attachment Treatment Model (ITATM®)—a practical, step-by-step framework designed to help trauma clients depotentiate, process and integrate past trauma experiences so they can heal effectively. This isn’t just theory—it’s an actionable method you can start using right away. ITATM® integrates sensory processing, somatic therapy, art, visualization, bilateral stimulation, resourcing, and reframing, using a structured, bottom-up protocol.

CPD

CPD

PESI Australia, in collaboration with PESI in the USA, offers quality online continuing professional development events from the leaders in the field at a standard recognized by professional associations including psychology, social work, occupational therapy, alcohol and drug professionals, counselling and psychotherapy. On completion of the training, a Professional Development Certificate is issued after the individual has answered and submitted a quiz and course evaluation. This program is worth 11.5 hours CPD for points calculation by your association.

Objectives

  1. Identify trauma and stressor-related disorders and how they inform trauma-focused treatment planning.
  2. Differentiate between developmental, attachment-related, and shock trauma in clinical practice.
  3. Recognize common trauma symptoms and comorbidities, and select appropriate intervention strategies.
  4. Incorporate trauma-informed assessment tools to evaluate readiness and monitor progress.
  5. Explain how trauma impacts the brain and describe approaches that support neurobiological healing.
  6. Describe the three-phase treatment approach emphasized in ITATM®: stabilization, trauma processing, and reintegration.
  7. Compare key trauma modalities and how ITATM® integrates their evidence-based elements.
  8. Apply phase-based strategies like sensory regulation and bilateral stimulation to promote emotional safety.
  9. Utilize somatic, cognitive, and expressive tools to support trauma recovery.
  10. Analyze case examples that demonstrate phase-based interventions in complex trauma treatment.
  11. Assess how integrative, phase-based trauma treatment can support healing within time-limited clinical settings.
  12. Summarize current research supporting integrative trauma approaches like ITATM®.

Outline

Foundations of Trauma and the ITATM® Framework

  • Module 1: Understanding Trauma & Why Clients Stay Stuck
    • The neurobiology of trauma and its impact on brain development
    • How trauma responses become hardwired (fight/flight/freeze/fawn)
    • The role of attachment injuries in developmental trauma
    • Why many trauma survivors do not respond to traditional talk therapy
    • How trauma and comorbidities (e.g., anxiety, dissociation, depression) interact
    • Introduction to ITATM®: a neuro-informed, attachment-focused model for trauma recovery

  • Module 2: Trauma Assessment and Treatment Planning
