After decades of seeing people in the aftermath of profound loss and trauma, I’ve learned there’s a critical distinction between prevention & postvention strategies, and that too often clinicians use prevention strategies when postvention is needed. Not understanding the difference can lead to significant harm and unknowingly increase self-blame, rumination, and more when working with everyone from those who have lost loved ones to abuse survivors.
